Julia Sweeney habla sobre abandonar a Dios

Why you left your religion.

During my childhood, religion has never been too important an issue, it was more a social commitment to a spiritual obligation. I am baptized, confirmed and I made my first communion, like all children I know.

My mother calls itself "freethinker," my father is a Mason. My maternal grandfather is an atheist and my mother's mother is Protestant. My paternal grandmother is a devout Catholic and my paternal grandfather I never met him.

I myself grew up in a mostly Catholic country, and studied in a Catholic school from kindergarten through high school. Still, long before the call themselves Agnostic, Catholic was simply by association.

Unlike many atheists that I know, I never had a bad experience with religion. All the Religious who surrounded me during my life were intelligent people, sensitive and of great wisdom.

At 12 years old, I embarked on the quest to know who I was, why was here, and what I was supposed to do. I studied from kindergarten through high school, in a Catholic school, so my logical first step was to begin to deepen the Catholic religion, because at my age, seemed to have all the answers.

After reading the doctors of the Church, the majority of classical philosophers and the Renaissance ones, I ventured to read the Bible. Since I was in that task, I became interested in the Jews. So when I finish with the "official" texts, I began to read the words of some Rabbis and then throw myself to the Torah.

Since I was on this path, I have to admit that the way I get drunk, so I kept going more by the desire for knowledge that the search of the questions that had motivated me to start in the first place. So I began to study the teachings of various Imams and when I felt confident enough I started reading the Quran.

For me, at this point the logical step is to continue with the rest of the Great Religions. So I studied everything I could find on Hinduism and Buddhism. For this theology was one of my concerns and I began to read about Zoroastrianism and Taoism. I am Mexican, so it was just logical that at some point consider the Aztec religion, the Maya, the Olmec and the Zapotec.

Although I enjoyed my intellectual journey through the different world religions, I realized that every one of them was the result of different needs, ideologies and people's hopes from the people from where that particular ideology first born. A man create god.

I am an engineer. As such, I consider myself a scientist. According to all the evidence available to me, the universe is infinite, and we know only a tiny portion of our planet and its closest vicinity. I do not think there is a higher power, do not believe that an omnipotent being who cares for us, or it's are interested in what we do with our lives, do not believe in life after death, or justice other than what we impose on today and now ... But, I have no evidence that I am wrong and all that is real. Why I'm an agnostic.

I believe that religion is essentially good. All religions with which I found at the bottom say the same: Treat others with love. Do not kill, do not steal, do not lie. Take care of your body. To me, those who need to believe in a higher being to give meaning to their lives, they are simply still too immature to go out and face the world alone as it is.

Men and women of faith are like children who are afraid to sleep alone in their own beds and take refuge in her parents' bed.
